Abstract:

Corporate success is only possible in the modern world if a business can keep track of its
human and material resources. The sheer size of modern office spaces can often make
this task very difficult. Therefore an electronic location system that can accurately locate
mobile resources around the office would be of great benefit to a corporation.

NetBadge is an electronic location system that solves the resource location problem. The
system consists of a set of roaming Badges that are continually detected by Sensor
Stations, placed throughout the office space, using Infrared communications. Each Sensor
Station periodically forwards Badge sightings to a Central Server, which then publishes
Badge location information to the Internet. When one Badge is attached to each resource
and many Sensor Stations are installed, the movements of employees and objects around
the office space can be accurately monitored by the NetBadge system without the need
for any user interaction.

The NetBadge system provides a low cost solution to the modern day location problem
and proves that real time location of mobile resources is possible. This thesis also
provides the groundwork for exploration into a myriad of office automation and mobile
computing applications that are set to revolutionise the corporate environment.
