Modeling of DBR Mirrors for Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers.

ABSTRACT

As the vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is such an advantageous device, comparing favourably to conventional edge emitting lasers, there is a great need for research in this area. A VCSEL consists of a semiconductor active region which is sandwiched between two reflective mirrors of high reflectivity.
Typically, Bragg reflector mirrors areused to improve overall VCSEL efficiency, compensating for the short cavity length. Hence, the object of this thesis is to investigate the DBR mirror properties, by examining the given theory of optical multilayers and using simulations programs to model the properties.

Simulation has been be conducted through the use of the technical computing program, Matlab. The programs investigated several properties of DBR mirrors, and the results obtained compare accurately to theoretically predicted results.A practical experiment in constructing and measuring the reflectivity of a DBR stack showed results that were highly correlated with the theoretically predicted results and the simulated Matlab results.
