Within the last few year, there is a great increase in Internet user demanding for fast speed Internet communication. Due to the congestion of bandwidth at lower frequency spectrum, the research focus has been shifted into millimeter wave range of the spectrum where is virtually unused except in outer space communication. The reason for millimeter wave frequency not being widely applied in terrestrial communication is the signal at this frequency is liable for great attenuation in either rain, dust, or foliage etc. Therefore, the system design using this frequency has to be limited within a short distance communication. Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) system is designed to utilise millimeter wave frequency at around 28GHz.
LMDS system is a line-of-sight wireless communication system using cells similar to wireless mobile communication except it is fixed and the cell sizes are smaller, 2 – 5km in diameter. Using this super high frequency for communication, it ensures the broadband bandwidth and thus can provide not only fast Internet access but also broadcast video, video-on-demand, multimedia capability, interactive video, telephony, telecomputing, speed learning, video conferencing, electronic sales/marketing, home shopping and high speed computer data links, etc.
The aim of this thesis is to design an effective and reliable transmitter
using millimeter wave components from companies and determine various specifications
for the transmitter. Last, there is discussion on how the performance
can be further improved.
