ZBOARD: Affordable Consumer Internet Access
Andrew Over (in conjunction with Simon Gee)
Abstract:
This thesis describes the design and implementation of a low-cost,
consumer oriented Internet access device known as the ZBOARD. This
product is designed to allow access to a subset of the Internet's
information and services at the minimum possible cost. The ZBOARD
departs from the majority of existing products by implementing a
software modem using the system processor rather than external
hardware. A full analysis of the system's design and performance has
been completed, and a number of design improvements have been
suggested. While the ZBOARD's development is not complete, it serves
as a useful "proof of concept", and the design is soon to
undergo commercial development.
