LAN-Cash is a digital cash system that has been designed to provide a method of selling products and services in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering department of the University of Queensland. This system interacts with its users through an Internet Web shop, which allows people to browse the products and services available and also place orders. The digital money is kept on a separate module that users can’t access and a systems administrator is responsible for the order processing and funds management in this sub-system.
This thesis will initially look into some of the existing digital cash
systems and their properties. From this information, the best characteristics
are noted and design decisions are made as to how LAN-Cash will operate.
The actual implementation of LAN-Cash is then described followed by an
evaluation of the final system. Possible future developments of the system
are discussed before finally reaching conclusions regarding the LAN-Cash
system and personal reflections on the design decisions made during the
project.
