Video Conferencing Over ATM Networks
Greg Smyth
Abstract: The following thesis investigates the design and implementation
of a videoconferencing system utilising an ATM network.
The theory of digital video is discussed, comparing the colour spaces
or RGB and YUV, and the different video capture methods. The pro and cons
of CCD and the relative new comer CMOS cameras are also look at.
With digital video requiring high bandwidth’s in the order of 196 Mb/sec,
the ATM standard and the PCI bus are overviewed to give an understanding
of why these were chosen and there benefit to the design.
The final design was shown to have inadequacies in relation to the
inefficient use of network bandwidth and that the overall design need the
addition of audio to become a real videoconferencing system.
