Issues in the Planning of Wideband CDMA Wireless Network Student: Filip Stojic Supervisor: A/Prof. Marek Bialkowski Category: Computer Systems Engineering Thesis Project Society today is on the doorstep of the communication revolution. There is an increased market demand for new wireless communication services, which have to offer faster and better service than the existing systems. Due to the recent progress in the field of the wireless communications as well as progress in the computer industry, all the conditions have been acquired for the human kind to step toward the Mobile Information Society in the very near future. The air interface that can enable this to eventuate is the Wideband Code Division Multiple Access interface (WCDMA), being defined as such upon the multiple access technique used for transmission and the bandwidth used. This thesis is an examination into the issues pertaining to the planning of the WCDMA wireless network. Thesis begins with the foundations of the CDMA system and evolution of CDMA to Wideband CDMA. Mobile radio systems propagation environment issues and their effect on the planning of the wireless network are given. Processes and tools, used in the planning and design of WCDMA wireless network, are surveyed. Various techniques integrated into WCDMA network for the further improvement of the Quality of Service are discussed. WCDMA network planner has a task of designing a network that should support variable quality of service and grade of service superior to Second Generation wireless network. WCDMA system offers fast bit rates, low call drop, complex power control, soft and softer handoff. Typical applications are mobile Internet and video telephony.
