Development of a Graphical User Interface for the assessment of the parameters of Synchronous Machines from measured frequency responses Student: Kim Hee Chua Supervisor: Dr. Allan Walton Category: Electrical Engineering Thesis Project In the early days before 1950s, the traditional method for determining the machine parameters of a synchronous machine was by the sudden short circuit and open circuit step response tests. This type of method is being gradually replaced by a new technique known as the frequency response analysis that is now being widely used. In this thesis, an analytical approach will be applied in conjunction with the use of this frequency response method for the determination of the machine parameters. This analytical approach will focus on the direct axis of the synchronous machine and as well as making use of the phase information obtained from the frequency response of the operational inductance to identify the machine parameters. A window based program that is written in a software package known, as MATLAB will be presented in this thesis for performing the task of determining the machine parameters. This program will basically include a Graphical User Interface that provides a friendly interactive process for pole-zero extraction from the frequency response of the operational inductance. The program will also allow the user to see the effects caused by variations when the machine parameters alpha, a and centre frequency, Fc are varied separately. Hence the structure of this program will be broken down in to two major parts, which consist of the core program, which does all of the calculations and the GUI that performs the interfacing. More details on the explanation of these two parts will be further discussed. This thesis will also highlight the results obtained from the simulation as well as discussing some of the recommendations for future development.
