Home Security System with Bluetooth Technology Student: Hun Seng Chua Supervisor: Dr. Adam Postula Category: Electrical Engineering Thesis Project In recent years, wireless applications have been rapidly evolving in personal computing and communications devices. By using Radio Frequency (RF), it resulted in a new way for people to communicate and gain access to data without the means of cables. The Bluetooth wireless technology was created to solve a simple problem: replace the cables used on mobile devices with radio frequency waves. Bluetooth is an open specification and the technology encompasses a simple low-cost, low power solution for integration into devices. Bluetooth operates at the globally unlicensed 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) band that is available worldwide. Moreover, Bluetooth employs frequency hopping and has a data rata of up to 1 Mbps for both voice and data. My thesis would explore the incorporation of the Bluetooth wireless technology into the Home Security System. This thesis will just be focusing on the Home Security System motion detector alone. The implementation of this thesis application will be in Windows™ environment, created using Microsoft Visual C++ that utilizes MFC and the Bluetooth PC Reference Stack. The uses of the Bluetooth technology would enable a Laptop (User) to control the setting (e.g. arming, disarming, sensitivity and range) of the motion detector. With the usage of Bluetooth technology, a typical motion detector, which is connected with cables, can be easily replaced with a wireless one. The User may, from his room, use his laptop to secure his house without having to walk to the control console to activate it. Thus, in layman’s term, wireless control of the motion detector setting equals to greater User flexibility.
