Power Quality Analysis by Wavelet Technique Student: Liang Wah Cheok Supervisor: Dr. Tapan Saha Category: Electrical Engineering Thesis Project Electric power quality is an aspect of power engineering that has been with us since the inception of power systems. However, the topics in power quality have only risen to the forefront over the past five to ten years because of an increase in wide-ranging electronically controlled equipment. The lack of industry standards and application criteria in the area of power quality has become very evident. The power quality problem causes interruptions to the sensitive electrical or electronic equipment and results in very expensive consequences. Power quality analysis involves an extensive knowledge of electrical power system theory. The coverage of power systems includes its roles in the generation, transmission and distribution. In order to improve on the electric power quality problem, the implementation of a power quality survey is necessary to determine the sources of these power disturbances and actions that can economically mitigate the impact of these power disturbances. In this thesis, the wavelet transform will be incorporated as a powerful tool for monitoring power quality problems. The thesis will discuss the power quality definitions and the results of previous studies carried out in power quality monitoring. This will be followed by the type of monitoring instrument used in this project and an introduction on the wavelet transform technique. The investigation process was carried out at the University of Queensland in Substation 14 for the past four weeks. The results analysed by the wavelet transform technique will then be published. The thesis concludes with the result obtained and will provide recommendations for further development which would be discussed as well.
