An ADSL TelecommunicationsTestbed : Software Aspects Student: Stanley Tsai Supervisor: Vaughan Clarkson Category: Engineering Thesis Project - Communications Today, variety techniques for providing users with high quality, high capacity digital transmission links have been in the research focus the last years. Both academia and industry try to develop methods that can provide the consumers with high capacity transmission links at minimum price. A new digital technology named ADSL is one of the most promising technologies for providing wideband communication capacity to the consumer. It utilising the twisted-pair copper wires that already exist in almost every home for wideband data transmission and provides the downstream (from the service provider to the customer) data rate up to 9 Mbps and upstream (from the customer to the service provider) data rate up to 1 Mbps. The scope of this thesis covers the software implementation on the standard ANSI ADSL modulation technique -Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) modulation, Analog to Digital conversion (ADC), Digital to Analog conversion (DAC), serial to parallel conversion, parallel to serial conversion and initialising the Analog Front End (AFE) routines. The DMT algorithm was implemented by using Texas Instrument (TI) development tools: TMS320C6711 Design Start Kit (DSK) board and under the Code Composer Studio IDE V2.0 platform. As the result, a working implementation of combining the FFT, IFFT, encoding, decoding, auxiliary functions, and daughterboard peripheral hardware, an ADSL modem was constructed.
