Category: Engineering Thesis Project - Computer Systems

Networking has been a growing trend affecting our everyday life. People have been trying to maximize their bandwidth usage it order the get more out of their heavy investment. By combining voice and data services into a single network, will help maximize bandwidth usage and help reduce operational cost. A mean of transmitting voice over the Internet Protocol (IP) is now being researched and developed. The voice communication is divided into 3 stages; PC-to-PC, PC-to-phone, and phone-to-phone.

An IP Telephone is a device that transports voice in packets over a data network using the Internet Protocol (IP) of the TCP/IP protocol suite. The theme of the thesis is to understand and develop of an IP telephone system. A pair of prototype IP telephones has been developed. A Server program and a set of protocols have been designed to provide administrative support and facilitate communication for the system.

This project was divided into three sections, namely the telephone hardware, telephone firmware and the server program, that were developed concurrently. My part is to develop the firmware for the microprocessor (RCM 2200) of the telephone for the purpose of interfacing all the supporting devices, including network handling via phone-to-phone and phone-to-server.
