Over the past few years, the number of subscribers to wireless services has increased at an enormous rate of over 60% per annum. Due to this increase in subscribers, the radio spectrum allocated for 2nd generation communication system has been exceeded. This situation has been the motivating factor for developing of third-generation communications systems (3G) to increase system capacity. 3G is breakthrough in technology, which not only supports larger user capacity but also provides more enhanced services to subscribers such as mobile internet, GPS and video conferencing. With the third generation mobile communication service near hand, development of base station antennas for IMT-2000 services is actively in progress. The purpose of this thesis is to design a wideband dual polarized base station antenna suitable for applications in IMT-2000 services. The thesis covers some fundamental antenna parameters to allow readers to have a better understanding in antenna performances. In addition, several design techniques related to development of the antenna design are mentioned The antenna design strategy adopted in this thesis is based on antenna CAD package; ‘Ensemble’ from Boulder Microwave Technologies which has the ability to model antenna design with high degree of accuracy. Based on the results obtained, the feasibility of the design for the implementation into base station for the coming 3G services is determined. Furthermore, the work done in this thesis provides a platform for future work on similar topics.
