IP Telephone

Student: Yong Yik Hoh

Supervisor: Neil Bergmann

Category: Engineering Thesis Project - Computer Systems

Due to the overwhelming demand for faster digital communication, there has been a rapid research and development in the medium of Ethernet applications. This has been done through the exploitation of the properties of the medium, namely bandwidth and capacity. Application of Ethernet includes, IP telephones, video conferencing, information sharing etc.

An IP Telephone is a device that transports voice in packets over a data network using the Internet Protocol (IP) of the TCP/IP protocol suite. The theme of the thesis is to understand and develop of an IP telephone system. A pair of prototype IP telephones has been developed. A server program and a set of protocols have been designed to provide administrative support and facilitate communication for the system

The project was divided into three sections, namely the hardware development, telephone firmware and the server program. This section of the thesis involves the design and development of the IP telephone hardware. The hardware architecture is shown as below.

The IP telephone hardware handles the following modules:

a) Keypad detection and encoding.

b) Alarm, switches and display unit.

c) Digital voice sampling and conversion.

d) Interfacing with the Network Micro-controller Unit. (RCM2200)
