Design of an AVR for the laboratory machines

Exhibitor: Kian Lim

Industry Sector: Energy and Utilities

In recent years, synchronous machines have move almost completely from analogue control to digital control. It is therefore necessary to develop a digital control for the machine.

The topic of this thesis involves the design and development of a three-phase Automatic Voltage Regulator of the synchronous machine for the school’s laboratory. This involves the development of a firing circuit and a three-phase full bridge rectifier. The design of this firing circuit will allow us to control the field current needed to drive the rotor of the synchronous machine. Currently, construction of the firing circuit is only available in single-phase analogue and we are now implementing it to a fully digital controller using a microprocessor. This will provide a firing angle to control the three-phase rectifier circuit.

On completion of this thesis, the constructed circuit will improve the overall effectiveness of the operation of the machines currently used in the laboratory. This includes a more accurate measurement of voltage and current, as well as monitoring and displaying it in its digital values.
