Shaft Voltages in Synchronous Machine

Student: Raymond Neo

Supervisor: Geoffrey Walker

Category: Engineering Thesis Project - Electrical

Shaft voltages are due to magnetisation asymmetries that appear between the shaft of the motor and ground. Steps are taken to inhibit large circulating currents but if they occur, serious damage to the bearings of the motor will ensue.

Asymmetries are the magnetic circuits of the stator and rotor cause imbalances in the flux flow in machines. The effects of this are that voltages are induced into the circuit made up by the bedplate, bearing pedestals and shaft.
