ITEE Innovation Expo 2008 : Project DetailsBusiness Process Mapping & Analysis - Railway Clearance ManagementStudent: Paul KangSupervisor: Xue Li Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to analyse the existing systems within QR that have in someway, a connection with clearance measurement for assets/structures in the rail network. The analysis of these systems will provide a gap analysis of the current status and provide opportunities for further improvement. The two different categories of systems that were examined include: * Measurement systems * Asset/Equipment Registers In order to effectively investigate these systems the project was divided into six phases: * Introduction * Planning * Information Gathering & Research * Analysis & Design * Development * Deployment After analysing the different systems it was evident that the information within these systems provided little or no assistance to the decision making process of clearances. The information that was found in a majority of the systems was out of date, incomplete or not recorded at all. This provided a gap analysis and allowed a new conceptual ER model to be designed which would manage all clearance related data for all structures. It has been recommended that QR design a centralised system that can be accessed by all departments within QR. If this is carried out, it will aid in the decision making process when in need to determine clearances for structures within QR. |
