SIMULATION OF LINE AND EARTH INTEGRITY

Student: Raj Jadav
Supervisor: Tapan Saha
Abstract:

Reverse polarity and neutral failures can produce potentially dangerous voltage levels within electrical consumer’s premises. While earthing at the consumer’s premise is good during the installation, it may degrade over time. Existing conventional electromechanical energy meter do not detect such condition at the consumer premises. Hence, accurate detection of conditions such as reverse polarity, earthing and neutral failure and degradation is required to ensure safe and reliable operation of electrical system at the electrical consumer premises. It is highly desirable that protection system is designed such that it should detect such condition accurately and it should not be oversensitive, as this could lead unnecessarily unacceptable high level of “nuisance” operation. The main objective of this thesis is to derive various indices to detect neutral and earthing failure or degradation and reverse polarity condition at the electrical consumer's premise. The simulation is carried out with the MATLAB® – SIMULINK® with SimPowerSystems™ software and various indices are derived from the results obtained. These indices can be integrated into a smart meter to accurately detect earthing and neutral failure or degradation at consumer premises.
